Homer's Odyssey On a ten-year voyage across cold and choppy seas with nothing but the bitter wind at one’s back, physical strength is a necessity. The chances of successfully trekking home with weak limbs are not great. In Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus is the epitome of power. His brawny physique undoubtedly grants him the strength to swim, climb, run and even kill his way back to his wife. But Odysseus cannot return home on physical force alone, as many of the obstacles he faces are mental. Perhaps the greatest of these obstacles is temptation. The "battle-weary" man’s odyssey is brimming with temptations of the mind, body and soul that he must not only grow out of, but conquer, in order to return home and stake his glory. The first blatant example of temptation in Odysseus’ journey happens on the island of the Lotus-eaters. The delicious but devious fruit of the lotus, he and his men discover, has the power to muddle one’s memory so that he forgets about home. While some of the men succumb to the fruit, Odysseus demonstrates remarkable self-control. This is in stark contrast to the way he handles himself in other tempting situations along the voyage. In this scene, though, Odysseus does not forget his longing for home and that is why his reaction to this temptation is interesting. It immediately shows us that he does possess self-control and has a goal he is eager to reach. It suggests that the willpower he lacks later in the poem is, in fact, always inside of him. It is not something he needs to learn, but something he needs to improve upon and make a permanent part of his identity instead of a fleeting one. This scene proves that Odysseus has the power to be confronted by something all uring and not be taken in by it. Nonp... ...e voyage, the cunning fighter is not hasty at the end of the poem. Disguised as an old beggar, he could have revealed his true identity much earlier than he does. Instead, he waits for the right moment to strike. The suitors test his patience and perhaps his temper seethes within, but he does not make his fury known until the perfect moment. When the time comes to strike, he combines the cunning he has had all along with a newfound sense of control. The belief that what does not kill someone can only make them stronger is especially true in Odysseus’ case. His journey is peppered with temptations that collectively build up his will. Some of them temporarily distract him, while others are meant to seal his doom. And even though he falls down, makes mistakes, and tests the limits along the way, his courage and his yearning for home lead to his ultimate enlightenment.

In response, Dr. King wrote a powerful letter to the â€Å"genuine† clergymen announcing his strong opinions and beliefs toward segregation, discrimination, and racism. Dr.Martin Luther King Jr. executed such an overwhelming piece of writing expressing the poor treatment of African Americans, the explanations of his actions, and his opinions regarding a true and better government. He expressed his desire and faith for the greater good and change in this letter with the use of emotional appeals such as imagery, diction, and descriptions of his harsh personal experiences regarding segregation and discrimination because of his skin color.Paragraphs 14 and 15 consists of emotional twists from unjust laws and release a combination of emotional and harsh events from the African American’s reality that bring the reader into their perspective from a hated level. In these paragraphs, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gets more personal and specific about the harsh treatment of African Americans and personal experiences regarding their harsh reality. Imagery shows all throughout this paragraph to create powerful and tear quenching emotions from the reader to get you to at least slightly understand their perspective.Dr. King immensely expresses what not only he, but all African Americans are and have been going through. He is able to paint a picture in the readers’ head of the abuse, pain, and hatred they have felt. But when you have seen vicious mobs lynch your mothers and fathers at will and drown your sisters and brothers at whim; when you have seen hate filled policemen curse, kick, and even kill your black brothers and sisters; when you see the vast majority of your twenty million Negro brothers smothering in an airtight cage of poverty in the midst of an affluent society†¦(218).All I see is hate filled police and Caucasian’s with disgust in their face causing undeserving pain to people that only have one difference: their skin color. Although I was not there to personally experience this torment, Dr. King is able to withdraw my emotions with just the truth, and put me on his side. His picture withdrew disgust and angriness for what our society is and how human beings can be. That little piece of the actual paragraph is just a glimpse. Dr. King goes on and on about their mistreatment.They are not just pained physically, but they are also haunted emotionally and mentally as well, â€Å"When you are harried by day and haunted by night by the fact that you are a Negro, living in constantly tiptoe stance, never quite knowing what to expect next, and are plagued with inner fears and outer resentments; when you are forever fighting a de generating sense of â€Å"nobodiness†Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬  (218). Personally, feeling alone and insignificant is one of my worst fears about life, and Dr. King along with â€Å"twenty million† others suffered from this feeling for centuries.Imagery was able to capture my full attention in this paragraph, allowed me to see a glimpse of their pain, suffering, and mistreatment. With the powerful impact of imagery in these paragraphs, it certainly wasn’t the only strategy he used. Diction was an immeasurable aspect of this paragraph. The structure of Dr. King’s vocabulary was eloquent and delivered in such a structured, skillful manner that he was able to draw tear-filled emotions to his audience. He used words such as ‘curse’, ‘kick’, ‘lynch’, ‘kill’, ‘smothering’, ‘humiliated’, and ‘despair’.These words are able to describe to the reader of the completely atrocious way peopl e treated each other because of such an insignificant matter, the difference in skin color. Just reading these chosen words and how well it played with imagery, I winced. Using diction is shown to be powerful in this case because if Dr. King were to have only said, ‘mistreatment’, ‘abuse’, or ‘discriminated’, it would not have withdrawn as much emotion from his audience at the time and the readers now.His in detail descriptions of his barbaric treatment and personal experiences is the most influential and compelling strategy in paragraph 14 and 15. The disturbing events that occurred in that time period showed how cruel mankind to be. Dr. King shares experiences such as explaining to his children their harsh realities at that moment in time: When you suddenly find your tongue twisted and your speech stammering as you seek to explain to your six year old daughter why she can’t go to the public amusement park that has just been advertised on television, and see tears welling up in her yes when she is told that Funtown is closed to colored children, and see ominous clouds of inferiority beginning to form in her little mental sky†¦When you have to concoct an answer for a five year old son who is asking: ‘Daddy, why do white people treat colored people so mean? (218). Children are thought to be so innocent, pure from hatred, and chance giving and then when their little hearts are corrupted to think they are less than someone else, and they feel like they are in a world full of hurt, what are they to do then?Dr. King also shares his bleak experiences of witnessing that hatred be performed with murder and being denied what is thought of as automatic rights. These personal experiences not only keep your nose to the paper, but it is appalling to know the easy capabilities we hold as human beings to torment others for little things not only mentally, but physically, to the point of taking their lives completely aw ay from them.These lives taken lived a life where they were beaten and never shown the feeling of whole freedom and life without hypothetical chains. Dr. King was able to use these experiences to squeeze emotions out of his audience. They not only described their cold facts, but it brought me to his level of understanding and on his side. Dr. King did more than just simply explain their experience. Dr.King described that they have been waiting â€Å"for more than 340 years for† their â€Å"constitutional and God given rights† and watching other nations such as â€Å"Asia† and â€Å"Africa† move â€Å"with jetlike speed toward gaining political independence†, but how the United States was still creeping â€Å"at horse and buggy pace toward gaining a cup of coffee at a lunch counter† (217). He talked about how it was appalling for someone who never had to watch â€Å"vicious mobs lynch your mothers and fathers at will and drown your sisters a nd brothers at whim† (218) to say, â€Å"Wait. That with everything they have been through, they cannot and will not endure it any longer. He strongly felt that this could happen no longer, and that if it took â€Å"disobey[ing] unjust laws† (218) then he would. These paragraphs proved to be a monumental breakthrough for this letter. He described how he wasn’t going to take it any longer. After a lifetime of witnessing hate, ignorance, and abuse, personally being discriminated and segregated against for his skin color, and being thrown in jail for peacefully protesting, exercising the first mendment, he was still standing strong in his beliefs, not backing down. He was able to persevere through so much, and he wasn’t going to stop until his point was being made and change was happening. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was able to execute these immaculate paragraphs through emotional appeals (diction, imagery, and personal experiences) to minimally just slightl y understand what he has been through, and that he will not back down or tolerate it any longer.His cruel reality was not the only thing to breakthrough his audiences’ exterior but his strong will and genuine personality was able to make a huge impact. Through everything, and only being shown hate and violence, he retaliated with calmness, peaceful protests, and nonviolent maneuvers. This was more than the rest of the human race was able to do. After that, Dr. Martin Luther King deserves all the respect in the world.

Grades as a Source of Stress To my mind, grades are one of the realities that make students feel miserable and confused. Moreover, they aren’t always fair and can completely eradicate the desire to study in a diligent manner. If another person, who is not as assiduous as you are, still gets the same grades – why bother and spend sleepless nights hammering at books? And all of this is solely due to grades and their effect. To my mind, the main aim of education is not to collect the best and the highest grades, but to gain knowledge that is necessary for future life and success. But not everyone understands it. A lot of students think that if they direct all their efforts towards getting high grades, they will succeed. But they are wrong. In order to be prepared for the adult life, you have to develop many various skills, which is not possible is everything the student does is reading books on his own. Grades were introduced as a way of control and motivation for students, but instead became a source of students’ understanding of what injustice means and that often you can’t do anything with it. To my mind, it is not the best way to show it and definitely not the way to motivate students to studying. The main thing that should be done is changing some students’ perception of the grades’ essence. They have to understand that high grades do not guarantee the best result in career and personal life and have to understand that a lot of other spheres of life also call for their attention. In my opinion, the best way out is introduction of the other system of motivation and elimination of such unfair reality as grades.

Taking for an example, a suggested 8000 MW tidal generating plant with a barrage of 7 estuaries in the United Kingdom, the cost for it will be about USD 15 million. And setting up a tidal electrical generation station that will generate about 2200 MW is approximated to be USD 3 million. This is relatively high as compared to setting up the wind or solar generating plant. Even though the cost of setting up this source of electricity it gives more reliable and much power as compared to wind and solar ( other renewable sources ). This form of generation of electrical source employs the use of tides to generate electrical energy, therefore, this form of electrical generation is basically located on large water bodies which have the tides. These tidal electrical generating stations are always set in the large water bodies (hence the name tidal energy) which is from the ocean tides(Harnoy, 2014). Tidal electrical energy is a form of renewable hydraulic energy source which has a higher potential since tides are much more reliable than solar and winds energy which varies due to weather and seasons(Multon, 2013). This energy is harnessed through the following three methods; Tidal turbines; Tidal Barrages Tidal lagoon. Tidal turbines employ very common techniques used in wind turbines, though their blades are highly shorter but very stronger than those for the wind. This technology makes good use of kinetic energy of flowing water to the turbines used to generate water. This method becomes more popular since it is highly removable since it has the movable turbines like those in a windmill. Therefore the best way to think of them is as windmills which are underwater. Generally, the water currents rotate the turbines, which will thus trigger a generator that is employed to generate electrical energy(Judy Trinnaman, 2013). This method will operate very well where there are very strong zones of tides like in British and Norwegian coastlines. But even though tidal turbine shows infancy it shows a lot of good production in future. The cost of upfront of these tidal system has a high installation cost and its maintenance is difficult even though cheap. This is still cheaper and has very less impact on the environment as compared tidal barrages. The figure below shows tidal turbines; Tidal barrages are almost as the Dams used in hydraulic power plants, but they are higher larger as they are constructed across a bay or an estuary(Wakelyn, 2015). The range of tides (difference in height between low and high tides) requires being excess of about 5 meters for this barrage to be practical. As the tides go in, water moves into the basin via the dam. Thereafter when the tides stop then the gates are closed this will, in turn, traps water in the estuary or even basin. When the tides move out of the gates in the dam that maintains the turbines are then opened and following water which moves via the turbine hence generating energy. This technique has very high cost of infrastructure and is very destructive to the native environment. The figure below shows a prototype of tidal barrages. The last method of tidal is tidal Lagoons are slightly similar but have a little cost and effect on the environment. These are self-contained schemes cut off from the rest of the ocean. Tidal Lagoons work very well the same way as for that of tidal barrage since when the tide rises the lagoons fill and then when it falls there will a lot of water released via the turbines. From the turbines, there are huge generators are coupled to this turbine(Wypych, 2011). The diagram below shows a Swansea tidal lagoon. These generators will hence generate AC power in most cases which are then passed through a step up transformer to help reduce power loss during the transmission. During stepping up the current is lowered and from the equation Where; P= power generated, I= generated electric current and R= resistances of the conductors. From the stepping up transformer, electric power is then transmitted to some step-down transformer at the consuming point. This form of generation is very cheap once installed since the tides are renewable and cannot get exhausted like those in coal, diesel among others. In all the forms of tidal energy production energy is produced at a relatively low cost. The generators used in the tidal energy generation are quite the same as those for the wind power generation except those for the tidal power are installed under water while those for wind are on land. The generators and the turbines of the tidal generating plants convert the movement of water from a variation of the tides which develop kinetic energy which is hence employed to generate electricity. Since water is heavier than the wind of about 830 times, it will hence produce more electricity at a relatively lower speed than those of t he wind speed. Therefore tidal energy produces about 1000 times more than wind energy(Joshua, 2012). Even though the tidal source of energy is not fully exploited globally, but in some countries where this form of electricity generation has been operating like in France, the United Kingdom and the United States a lot of electrical energy has been successfully generating a lot of electrical energy(Daniel, 2011). In United State produce and consume of about 1420 terawatt hours ( TWh) of tidal electricity yearly. And this is still low generation and consumption of this source of energy, there is a lot of expectation that this form of source energy generation is expected to produce and give a global energy consumption of about 15% of the total energy generated in the world by the year 2030. La Rance power station in France is the biggest tidal energy power plant producing about 500 GWh having about twenty-four turbines. There is a high possibility of generation of several tidal power, there is a probability that by the year 2040 there will be about 12% of the total electrical energy generated and consumed globally to be for the tidal electrical energy. With the environmental benefits of the tidal generation plant, the production of electricity from this source will highly increase. The increase in production of electricity from this source of generation will as well increase the consumption of electrical energy from this source of electrical generation. The best location for the tidal energy These tidal generating plants are basically located in oceans and seas, this is because the oceans and oceans always provide enough tidal energy which is hence employed to generate electrical power(Bansal, 2011). As seen above, this form of energy generation is highly reliable than other forms of renewable sources like wind and solar. This has been achieved due to their location on regions (oceans and seas) which has enough tides employed to drive the heavy underwater turbines used to generate electrical energy. This will make the oceans and seems to be the better locations for generating tidal energy than other water bodies like rivers and lakes which may have very little tides or have no tides at all(Copping, 2013). So with oceans and seas with a lot of tides will help to achieve a lot of electrical generation by this source of electrical energy. The figure below shows an overall tidal power plant employed to generate electricity; Conclusion In conclusion, tidal energy is one of the best and most clean sources of electricity since it does not pollute the environment. And with the installation and full adoption of tidal energy the use of coal, diesel and nuclear to generate electricity will highly decrease hence promote the safety of our environment further. The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried is not a novel about the Vietnam War. It is a story about the soldiers and their experiences and emotions that are brought about from the war. O'Brien makes several statements about war through these dynamic characters. He shows the violent nature of soldiers under the pressures of war, he makes an effective antiwar statement, and he comments on the reversal of a social deviation into the norm. By skillfully employing the stylistic technique of specific, conscious detail selection and utilizing connotative diction, O'Brien thoroughly and convincingly makes each point. The violent nature that the soldiers acquired during their tour in Vietnam is one of O'Brien's predominant themes in his novel. By consciously selecting very descriptive details that reveal the drastic change in manner within the men, O'Brien creates within the reader an understanding of the effects of war on its participants. One of the soldiers, "Norman Bowler, otherwise a very gentle person, carried a Thumb. . .The Thumb was dark brown, rubbery to touch. . . It had been cut from a VC corpse, a boy of fifteen or sixteen"(13). Bowler had been a very good-natured person in civilian life, yet war makes him into a very hard-mannered, emotionally devoid soldier, carrying about a severed finger as a trophy, proud of his kill. The transformation shown through Bowler is an excellent indicator of the psychological and emotional change that most of the soldiers undergo. To bring an innocent young man from sensitive to apathetic, from caring to hateful, requires a great force; the war provide s this force. However, frequently are the changes more drastic. A soldier named "Ted Lavender adopted an orphaned puppy. . .Azar strapped it to a Claymore antipersonnel mine and squeezed the firing device"(39). Azar has become demented; to kill a puppy that someone else has adopted is horrible. However, the infliction of violence has become the norm of behavior for these men; the fleeting moment of compassion shown by one man is instantly erased by another, setting order back within the group. O'Brien here shows a hint of sensitivity among the men to set up a startling contrast between the past and the present for these men. The effect produced on the reader by this contrast is one of horror; therefore fulfilling O'Brien's purpose, to convince the reader of war's severely negative effects. In the buffalo story, "We came across a baby water buffalo. . .After supper Rat Kiley went over and stroked its nose. . .He stepped back and shot it through the right front knee. . .He shot it twi ce in the flanks. It wasn't to kill, it was to hurt"(85). Rat displays a severe emotional problem here; however, it is still the norm. The startling degree of detached emotion brought on by the war is inherent in O'Brien's detailed accounts of the soldiers' actions concerning the lives of other beings. O'Brien's use of specific and connotative diction enhances the same theme, the loss of sensitivity and increase in violent behavior among the soldiers. The VC from which Bowker took the thumb was just "a boy"(13), giving the image of a young, innocent person who should not have been subjected to the horrors of war. The connotation associated with boy enhances the fact that killing has no emotional effect on the Americans, that they kill for sport and do not care who or what their game may be. Just as perverse as killing boys, though, is the killing of "a baby"(85), the connotation being associated with human infants even though it is used to describe a young water buffalo they torture. The idea of a baby is abstract, and the killing of one is frowned upon in modern society, regardless of species. O'Brien creates an attitude of disgust in the reader with the word, further fulfilling his purpose in condemning violence. Even more drastic in connotation to be killed is the "orphaned pupp y"(39). Adding to the present idea of killing babies is the idea of killing orphaned babies, which brings out rage within the reader. The whole concept is metaphoric, based on the connotations of key words; nevertheless, it is extremely effective in conveying
